The CONSTELLATIONS is comprised of two, unique suspended sculptures based on the geometry of specific constellations positioned above Denver’s skies during the Winter Solstice (Pegasus) and Summer Solstice (The Herdsman – Boötes ).
Charting a majestic journey reflecting the Airport’s personal universe, the iconic satellites highlight the enduring significance of cyclical seasonal transitions and reflect on the ancient human practice of celestial navigation.
Approaching the concourse’s two vertical atriums as liminal spaces connecting land and sky, the CONSTELLATIONS poetically situates the heart of the rocky mountain region within the larger universal expanse. Similar in scale and balance within each volume of space, the sculptures’ curvilinear forms are coated in a lustrous, copper tone. Each celestial position, calculated by their lightyears from Earth’s position and view, embeds custom glass and LED connections to articulate the presence of the constellation stars defining the internal orbits of each sculpture.
The streamlined, gestural elegance of the forms contribute to the clarity of the space and respect the larger architectural vision, establishing the sculptural satellites as key internal destinations. Encouraging moments of restful, calm contemplation, airport visitors have an opportunity to discover the nimble, shifting beauty of the pieces as they unfold in time.
As a timeless compass, the stars above can remind us of how we individually and collectively navigate our place in the world. In this spirit, the CONSTELLATIONS inspires an expansive sense of place, offering a vision that is both specific and universal; celestial beacons linking histories and futures for all.
