On the Edge of Self
2011

On the Edge of Self dissects the hybrid identity, no longer defined by a singular place, as the migrant condition of virtual and physical spatial coexistence. As personal experiences and relationships reflect an ongoing set of circumstances, particularly in pivotal moments regarding the decision to leave or stay, the artist considers a universal difficulty in the navigation of these dynamics, regardless of the where or why or the outcome of said choices.

The psychological state of the "in between" reveals these as a false choice, where places and spaces are part of the whole yet create a limbo of belonging and negate the linearity of identity evolution. One place does not leave the realm of influence as another, and a multiplicity of virtual others, continue to layer associations.

This collapse of space and time is highlighted through mechanisms of magic realism, in which magical elements are blended into realistic atmospheres in order to access a deeper understanding of reality. From pieces including The Garden of Forking Paths and The Aleph, the work references Jorge Luis Borges, specifically to the notion of simultaneous exposure to the world- once magical and now virtual- where constructed fictions and reality are permeable and interchangeable.

5'55"

Within the two-channel video, the circumstances are deconstructed through a series of parallel, bifurcating movements. Each actor, played by Penny Aviles and Paul Gyori, performs both sides of the dialogue, in a shared moment of choice. No decision is revealed, no destination or place reached. They exist in common spaces but never together. Real and virtual spatial confines juxtapose psychological movements within a static narrative.

The hanging sculpture, Aleph, makes specific reference to multiplicities and spatial confines through a double-sided illusion of infinite layers of a singular composition. These internal forms reflect spatial impossibilities; walls and doorways as illogical compartmental structures of the psyche. Viewable from both sides, a finite object separates the viewer, containing a boundless center as the immeasurable distance between them.
