Genesis Trial: China began a series of investigations in the multiplicity of modern centers and the global reinterpretations of cultural identities. Focused upon Beijing, the project presented leaps in virtuality, pop culture and youth interests leading to the destruction and reconstruction of allegory and myth within the struggle between modernization and cultural tradition.
The project featured a performance video referencing Ai Weiwei’s Dropping of the Urn (1995), where the artist constructed the pop dematerialization of the Tao mythological character, He Xiangu. On display were the new cultural artifacts of this performance in juxtaposition to large sculpture installations.
Genesis Trial: China was co-produced with Tube Creative, featuring animation by Jeff Conefry, and presented as part of the summer solo series of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. The project was supported in part by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, City of Atlanta and Michelle Deal.
