Genesis Trial, 2006 HD digital video, 16:9, 4' 20 The Genesis Trial video is a performance piece by the artist based upon the Tao immortal charachter, He Xiangu. In allegorical tales, this female symbolizes purity represented by the lotus flower. Fashioned after a futuristic fairytale, her robes reference the empiralistic garmets of the Empress and Concubine of the final dynasty. The western personification portrays the morph of cultural influences as she is being pulled between the ancient traditions, symbolized through a ceramic vase, and modern distractions of entertainment and technology, signified through cellphones, music, graffiti, and architechture. As the broken vessel is repaired and destroyed, so is the interpretation of traditions. The final, imperfect vessel is displayed alongside the video as the traditional scroll becomes a modern venue through projection. |
