Pursuing an experiential perspective of modernization and globalization within a pluralistic society, China becomes an obviously dynamic model to begin from. Opening a new studio in Beijing, I have been questioning the role and perspective of all parties within the consideration of the commoditization of cultures.

With the Chinese day-to-day being far simpler than western counterparts, the exchange of influence and the definitions of exploitation do not subscribe to traditional perspectives. A complex weave of cultural impressions make the western – outsider – perspective an undeniable factor to return to, while mixing the trivial entertainment of technology with the tools of ancient identities.

With this in mind, I have chosen to examine, and envision with a futurist aesthetic, the Chinese influences on western culture as well as the opposite invasions. Titled the Genesis Trial, this project questions the balance of traditional cultural and its reinterpretations by outside infiltrations. Leaps in conceptualization, pop culture and youth interests lead the destruction and rebuilding of allegory and myth. Fairytales universally interweave natural metaphor with new media interactions, developing new social dynamics.

I look to continue this dialogue regarding cultural globalization as I expand this format next to South Africa.

This project features a new performance video co-produced with Tube Creative, sponsored by Michelle Deal, featuring animation by Jeff Conefry. Interrelated sculpture, video and new media preview during the summer solo series of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center before traveling back to China.
